Oxbow Ice
The Perinton Oxbow has been known for the glassy ice that blankets its surface. It has been a beloved ice skating destination for locals since its inception. To this day, during the winter you can see ice skating rinks cleared in the snow on the surface of the canal down by the Oxbow.
The local ice skaters were not the only ones to take notice to the quality of the ice in the Oxbow. During the early 1920s, the pristine ice of the Oxbow served as a valuable resource. It was harvested and utilized in the construction of structures detailed in the articles provided below:
Today, when the canal is lowered for the winter, parts of canal in the Oxbow dry up. The pilons that exist from the early Oxbow days are completely out of the water, and both Oxbow islands are easily accessible with the lower water levels.
